Isn’t it wonderful to find something you weren’t expecting to find in a place you weren’t expecting to find it? This little bit of serendipity happened for me last week. It was the right thing at just the perfect time.
I’m an avid reader – 1 or 2 books a week – all genres – all authors. I read books that are good for me, that teach me something, and then sometimes I read just for the pure pleasure of it.
Last week I was reading a mystery set in a small town named Three Pines in northern Québec. It was truly a page-turner and I was enthralled. Then, all of a sudden, the main character of the book, Armand Gamache, the Chief Inspector for the Sûreté du Québec, (impressive title for a policeman!) related this quotation he heard from an old Canadian fisherman. It stopped me cold. The quote:
“Where there is love, there is courage, where there is courage, there is peace, and where there is peace, there is God. And when you have God, you have everything.”
Lately I’ve had to be courageous and step out of my comfort zone in more than a few situations. I don’t consider myself a courageous person, but I am always truthful and trustworthy. In thinking about these recent times for courage, I realize that love and courage are truly interrelated. If I didn’t have love for my work and my church, I wouldn’t have the courage to speak the truth. I’d probably just wait for someone else to do it, and more often than not, that just doesn’t happen.
I like having courage and I know I have it because I have love and peace.
