Love and Legacy

This week marked the 150th Anniversary of my home congregation, Kernersville Moravian. I was warmed by the individual legacies of love all around me. We sang the hymn “We raise our voice in One Accord,” written for the occasion by my friend and a daughter of the congregation, Nancy Shore Sawtelle. Communion was served by father and son The Rt. Rev. Graham Rights and The Rev. John G. Rights, and The Rev. Lisa Mullen. I rode up to the fellowship hall in the elevator given by the late Ida Roberts. The sanctuary itself. The pipe organ. The hundreds of names that were listed in the bulletin in Honor of and in Loving Memory of people I knew by people I knew. Everything I saw was a heartfelt gift of love, service and ministry from someone or the collective contributions of many. This love and legacy has been going on at Kernersville Moravian Church for 150 years. I could not help but wonder what my own legacy might be.

In my new position at the Moravian Ministries Foundation in America (MMFA), I am discovering the many tools to help individuals and congregations maximize their legacies. Our team works with individuals to maximize their giving and understand the benefits from a tax viewpoint. No one gives to the MMFA, but instead gives through MMFA to specific churches or ministries. We are a conduit through which value is added by investment management, expert advice, programming, tax optimization and more. You may have already received or soon will receive an insert in your church bulletin that outlines our many services. Also consider the following ways to optimize tax deductions for the current year or further manage your charitable gifts:

  • IRA Charitable Rollover – For many people 70 ½ or older, this is a tax-wise way to give. An IRA rollover gift will not be included in your taxable income and will qualify for your required minimum distribution.
  • Donor Advised Fund – Looking for an end-of-year deduction, but want more time to make thoughtful giving decisions?  A Donor Advised Fund lets you make grants now and in the future to support your favorite Moravian ministries.
  • Outright Gift of an Asset – Want to support a ministry this year, but also preserve your cash resources? Gifts of appreciated assets such as securities, business interest, or real estate can provide you with significant income and capital gains tax savings.
  • Planned Gifts – Planned gifts such as charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities and other structured vehicles allow you to get an income stream in return for your charitable contribution.
